Cordele man arrested for murdering his girlfriend
1:48
CORDELE, GA (WALB) – An update on a story we broke over the weekend. A man is in the Crisp county jail Monday morning after police say he killed his live-in girlfriend.
Cordele police arrested Sunday night. It's the city's first homicide of the year. 37-year-old Derek Armstrong is in jail charged in the murder of his girlfriend 26-year-old Tasha Grant.
Cordele police say they found Tasha Grant's body in the kitchen of the couple's apartment at 802 C North Second Street. Police were called to the scene around 3:30 Saturday afternoon.
Investigators aren't saying much about the motive but believe the couple got into some kind of fight or argument before the shooting.
"When officers arrived they found Tasha Grant with a gunshot wound to the head, nobody else was there at the house but we got some witnesses nearby that saw some stuff and the relatives showed up about the same time we did," said Chief Dwayne Orrick, Cordele Police Department Investigator.
Cordele police were on the scene for several hours Saturday night. The GBI assisted them.
Police say the suspect Derek Armstrong actually turned himself in Sunday afternoon, about 24 hours after the shooting took place. He was booked in the jail later at 6pm.
Cordele police say they have no other suspects at this time.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
