SHIPROCK, N.M. (AP) - A man waiting to report to prison for assault is accused of beating his girlfriend to death.
FBI Special Agent Darrin Jones says Nathan Jack originally was arrested on a tribal warrant, and FBI agents later arrested him on a murder charge.
Authorities say 23-year-old Jessica Shorty was pronounced dead on arrival Sunday at the Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock after Jack brought her in.
Agents believe Shorty and Jack were camping south of Hogback when an argument broke out.
Jack had been waiting to report to federal prison for an 18-month term after pleading guilty in April to assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The victim in that case was Shorty's brother.
