Arlington Heights, IL: $10K bond for man charged with killing ex's kitten

August 17, 2009

An Arlington Heights man charged with killing his ex-girlfriend's kitten when the four-month-old pet urinated on a rug was released from custody today after posting $1,000 bail.

But 25-year-old Kevin Colabuono faces up to three years in prison if he is convicted of felony animal cruelty for allegedly hurling Riley to the floor so violently the white, gray and brown kitten died.

Colabuono was charged Sunday after his ex-girlfriend returned to the apartment they had shared until their recent breakup and was told by him that her kitten had died, police said.

She called police — and Colabuono allegedly told investigators during questioning that he was responsible for the kitten’s death.

Colabuono admitted he killed the kitten after it urinated in the apartment, police said.

“He got mad, picked it up and threw it hard on the ground,” said Officer Doug Hajek, an Arlington Heights police spokesman.

Colabuono led police to a dumpster at the apartment complex, where officers found the kitten’s body wrapped inside a plastic bag, Hajek said.

Another cat living in the apartment wasn’t harmed, but was removed by police for safekeeping after Colabuono’s arrest.

In setting bond for Colabuono, Cook County Judge Kay Hanlon also ordered him to avoid any contact with animals until his case is resolved.
