A Fort Lauderdale man confessed to a friend that he stabbed his wife to death, police said.
Alberto Ramos, 49, was ordered held without bond in Broward County jail during his first appearance court hearing on Wednesday.
Ramos is charged with the first-degree murder of his spouse, Danitza Gomez Reyes.
Ramos allegedly killed his wife in their home in the 600 block of Antioch Avenue, according to a police report. Afterward, he took "30 to 40 pills" and, police believe, self-inflicted superficial cuts on his forearms.
About 9 a.m. Tuesday, Ramos called his friend, Jorge Rodriguez, and told him that he had killed his wife the night before during a struggle, police said.
Ramos repeatedly told his friend: "I have killed my wife," according to the police report.
Rodriguez called police to report the murder and Ramos offered police a non-existent address. After getting a description of the building from Rodriguez, police found the scene of the crime and saw a bloodied Ramos walk out of his apartment, the report said.
At that point, Ramos was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher reporting that he had killed Reyes, police said.
Detectives discovered Reyes face down inside the apartment's rear bedroom with a pool of blood around her head. Several knives were also found near her body, police said.
The police report contained no indication of a motive for the killing.
Ramos was ordered held without bond in Broward County jail during his first appearance court hearing Wednesday.
