Jacksonville, FL: Police: Man shot wife in driveway, kills self

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
A 50-year-old woman was shot and killed by her estranged husband early Friday morning while backing out of her Northside driveway, then the man turned the gun on himself a few feet away in the carport, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police identified the victims as Marquita Green and her 55-year-old husband, Clinton Green.

The murder-suicide came one week after divorce papers were served on the husband.

Just after 7 a.m., a neighbor who heard gunshots called police to the 2900 block of Jerry Lane -- near the intersection of Broward and Lem Turner roads.

"He had a firearm and it appears to be pretty evident that he shot her and then took his own life," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Shawn Coarsey.

Police said it appeared the woman was trying to leave in a hurry, backing over several garbage cans in the process.

Clinton Green (right) was under a domestic violence injunction filed by his wife earlier this month. He also had previous arrests domestic battery on his wife and domestic violence on a neighbor. Court papers show he was facing about $500,000 in liens from the IRS -- one on the couple's Jerry Lane home. Some of the liens date back 10 years.

Neighbors tell Channel 4's Kumasi Aaron the couple had a tumultuous relationship and they were not totally surprised to see it end this way.

"The police came out here a lot," one neighbor said. "We told the police that something like this was going to happen."

Gail Patin of Hubband House, Jacksonville's domestic abuse shelter, says women have to develop plans to protect themselves and their families to prevent a tragedy like this from happening.

"If they know you're at home and they have access to you, then they can attack you there,so you may have to leave," Patin said. "At the very least, you would want to switch the locks."
