NORTH VERNON, Ind. -- A Seymour man faces murder and attempted murder charges after police said he killed his ex-wife and shot her daughter in the head.
Officers were called to a home at 1965 Chatsworth Lane in North Vernon just before 9 p.m. Sunday on a report of a shooting.
Candice A. Sowder, 64, was found lying on the front porch of the home with a gunshot wound to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her daughter, Regina D. Johnson 42, was found shot in the head inside the home. She was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital. Her condition was not released Monday.
As police were talking to witnesses, they spotted a car trying to leave the area.
When officers stopped the vehicle, they found Sowder's ex-husband, James "Darrell" Sowder, 62, driving with a handgun on the front seat, police said.
Sowder was arrested on preliminary charges of murder and attempted murder. Police said more charges are likely.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
