Lexington, NC: Man who claimed girlfriend killed herself gets life after Davidson County murder conviction

Lexington, N.C. — A man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his girlfriend even though he said the death was a suicide.

The Dispatch of Lexington (http://bit.ly/QS70vW) reports that a Davidson County jury found Zachary Bowman guilty of murder Friday in the killing of Tosha Powers in September 2010.

Prosecutors say Bowman used a black cord necklace to choke the victim to death. They say Powers was trying to leave Bowman after he threatened her and her children.

Bowman says he found Powers hanging from the ceiling with an electric cord around her neck and pulled her down before calling 911.

But authorities say the marks on Powers' neck were too wide to match the electric cord.
