A man is dead from an apparent suicide and a subsequent house fire is under investigation after Prince George's County police said the man assaulted his wife Wednesday evening in Temple Hills.
Police received a call about 5:20 p.m. for a domestic dispute at a home in the 5300 block of Lorraine Drive, said Cpl. Larry Johnson, a county police spokesman. Prince George's County firefighters also responded to a call for a house fire and a report of gunshots at the same address, said Mark Brady, a county fire/EMS department spokesman.
"The preliminary investigation revealed that a husband and wife were in a domestic situation where the wife was assaulted by the husband," Johnson said. "The wife was able to leave the home and they found the husband, who was at the home, had committed suicide."
Firefighters responded to the scene of a two-story single-family home fire and during the 30 minutes it took to extinguish the blaze, firefighters located the husband suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Brady said.
Cpl. Rodney Gause, a county police spokesman, said the husband “set the house on fire and then took his own life”
Gause confirmed that the husband was found dead from an apparent suicide but did not say where the body was found or with what type of trauma.
His identity has not yet been released as of Thursday morning, Gause said.
Johnson said as of Wednesday evening the wife did not require to be transported to a local hospital but was "shaken up" by the events. Gause said there were no physical injuries found on the woman’s body.
The incident remains under investigation.
