Fort Smith, AR: Prosecutor seeks death penalty for stabbing death

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - A prosecutor says he'll seek the death penalty for a man accused in the stabbing death of his pregnant wife, who fell bleeding in the lobby of the Fort Smith police department.

Police arrested 34-year-old James Saylor Herring on May 15 for the slaying of 32-year-old Celestia Marie Duffin. Prosecutor Dan Shue announced Tuesday he'd seek execution for Herring.

The Southwest Times Record reports (http://is.gd/EdXC3O ) Herring is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, which includes the death of Duffin's baby. The baby was removed by Caesarean section but died before he could be flown to Arkansas Children's Hospital.

Herring is in the Sebastian County Jail without bond. Shue says he consulted family members of the victim and law officers before deciding to pursue the death penalty.
