SACRAMENTO, CA - A man convicted for beating his girlfriend to death was sentenced to prison Friday.
Donald Fernandes was sentenced to 26 years to life in prison for the first degree murder of 50-year-old Karen Curtin in January 2010, Sacramento County District Attorney Spokesperson Shelly Orio said.
In 2010, Fernandes called his ex-girlfriend and said he was at Curtin's home and that she was injured. The ex-girlfriend told him to call police, but when Fernandes refused, she called police to tell them about Curtin's injuries, Orio said.

When Sacramento police arrived at the scene, they found Curtin lying on her bed with a crushed skull, a sock shoved in her mouth and a plastic bag over her head. Orio said Fernandes told police Curtin tried to attack him with a hammer, but was able to turn it on her instead.
Curtin was transported to UC Davis Medical, where she died three days later from blunt force trauma to the head. An autopsy showed that Curtin was hit with a hammer 10 times, which crushed her skull.
