MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- Riley County police say the death of a couple inside a Manhattan home was the result of a murder/suicide.
The body of a man and woman were found inside a home at 715 Yuma Street on Friday afternoon around 2:30 PM.
The victims were identified as 23-year-old Amanda Bonner, who lived at that address, and 26-year-old Kawon Darmet Higgins.
The Riley County Police Department called the deaths "suspicious" at first, pending autopsy reports. On Tuesday, officials put a press release saying that it appears Higgins killed Bonner, the mother of his children, and then killed himself.
Lieutenant Josh Kyle, a spokesman for the department, stated in the release: "An autopsy has been completed and the preliminary results indicate that the incident appears to be a homicide/suicide with Mr. Higgins being the aggressor. An official classification is pending from the Coroner's Office in Kansas City. The two decedents had children together and the deaths appear to be related to an ongoing domestic situation. A previous Protection from Abuse order had been filed by Ms. Bonner but it had been dropped prior to the incident."
Lieutenant Kyle says the couple's children were not inside the home when their parents died.
Kyle told members of the media Tuesday that "the mode of death is not being released."
Amanda Bonner's family members say her best friend found the bodies Friday when Amanda did not show up for work.
Her family is in the process of making funeral arrangements.
