We first brought you the story as breaking news live at 530.
CBS 21 spoke to neighbors, who didn't know what to say when we told them of the latest news. This fire didn't only affect the couple who was involved and their families, it took a toll on the entire community.
"Oh my gosh!" stated Mary Lou Dietz.
"I was shocked to tell you the truth, I mean he was a nice person too," added Bert Taylor.
Mary Lou and Bert say they knew Robert and Nancy Clark as neighbors.
Friday, they couldn't believe news from police, as they announced the charges against 59-year-old Nancy Clark for setting fire to her home at the 600 block of Olive Street in Lancaster, knowing her husband was inside.
"Well it scared me because I could see the fire from my balcony and it was a little too close," Dietz included.
Nancy's suicide attempt did not go as planned. She and her husband were rescued. It was later at the hospital, a medical examiner says, where 86-year-old Robert Clark died of smoke inhalation, complicated by underlying natural lung and heart disease.
Later, Nancy Clark admitted to police that it was a suicide attempt gone horribly bad.
"I'm shocked, I'm shocked, I'm sorry that she would have been that despondent that she thought she had to kill herself it's just a very sad story," Dietz said sadly.
Nancy Clark now faces several charges including criminal homicide and arson. She's currently being treated for her injuries from the fire, at Crozer Chester Medical Center.
