HILLSBOROUGH -- A 41-year-old man has been charged with killing his girlfriend after he called 911 to report shooting her, Orange County sheriff's deputies said.
Christopher Eugene Rone of 5507 N.C. 86 North was charged Friday with felony first-degree murder, sheriff's investigator Dawn Hunter said. Rone was taken to the Orange County jail in Hillsborough, where he is being held without bail. His next court appearance will be Jan. 30.
Sheriff's deputies responded to the shooting call at 601 Hurdle Mills Road just after 11 p.m. Friday, Hunter said. They found Custain Levoya Crisp, 33, of the same address dead of a gunshot wound to the head and arrested Rone without incident. They found a handgun on top of a car, she said.
The couple did not appear to have problems before the shooting, but the Sheriff's Office is investigating, Hunter said. Other charges may be pending.
Rone's previous criminal history includes two driving while impaired charges in the mid-1990s and a felony habitual DWI conviction for which he served 18 months. He was released from the Orange County Correctional Facility in 2000.
He also was convicted in 1989 of felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
