An Anniston man accused of killing his wife pleaded not guilty during an arraignment Thursday.
Preston Vaughn, 57, appeared before Calhoun County Circuit Judge Malcolm Street at 9 a.m. and pleaded not guilty to the murder charge by reason of mental disease.
His wife, Geri Vaughn, 56, was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head on May 19.
It was Preston Vaughn himself who called Anniston police to the Moore Avenue home that he shared with his wife. When police responded, they found Geri Vaughn already dead.
Preston Vaughn’s attorney asked the judge to order a mental evaluation for his client during the Thursday arraignment.
The suspect remains in custody at Calhoun County Jail.

A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
