Denver, CO: Students mourn teacher killed in shooting near Congress Park

DENVER-- School will not be the same when Isiah Ruiz returns from winter break.

"It will be hard", Isiah exclaimed through his tears.
Andrea Roan, a fifth grade teacher at Alsup Elementary School in Commerce City was shot and killed on Friday.

"Ms. Roan was my favorite," Isiah said.

Police say Roan was killed by her ex boyfriend, 27 year old Ryan Miller. He allegedly shot Roan in an alley behind her Clayton St. apartment as she tried to drive away. Roan had just filed a protection order against Miller earlier in the week. But a motion to cancel the order was filed on Thursday.

" I hope the person who killed her suffers the consequences," says Isiah, who can not stop thinking about his teacher.

"This case is a familiar pattern", Amanda Milner said. She is a domestic violence counselor with Family Tree.

"Often the victim is intimidated, threatened, doesn't show up in court or shows up with the perpetrator and the order is dropped." Milner says anyone who believes they are the victim of domestic violence should reach out for help, seek protection. or call the police.

Her organization has suggestions for establishing a "safety plan" on their website, FamilyTree.com.
