A Gonzales woman is hospitalized in critical condition at a San Francisco Bay Area trauma center and the man police believed shot her was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound early Tuesday morning.

The incident took place shortly before 11 p.m. Monday after a verbal domestic dispute turned violent when the man produced a handgun and shot her once in the chest at a house in the 300 block of Ninth Street, according to police Sgt. Fred Lombardi.

Officers and paramedics responded after neighbors reported the shooting, he said, and the woman was flown by helicopter ambulance to the trauma center, where she was in critical condition Tuesday.

Gonzales police, aided by sheriff's deputies and officers from other South County departments searched through the night for the gunman, Lombardi said, until shortly after 7 a.m., when a resident in the 800 block of Bay Street called police to report finding a man lying in some bushes behind a wall.

Police found the man dead of a single gunshot wound, apparently self-inflicted, Lombardi said, and he was positively identified as the man who lived with the victim.

The two had a child who is being cared for by relatives, Lombardi said, and who was not present at the house when the shooting took place.

An autopsy on the man is scheduled today, Lombardi said, adding that his name and the name of the victim are being withheld until it is complete.

The shooting "was not gang-related," he said, "but

a domestic dispute that slipped into violence."
