SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A 28-year-old Republic woman faces a 10- to 30-year prison sentence for killing her ex-husband in a Republic city park.
Rachelle Morris entered an Alford plea on Tuesday to charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. The plea means she doesn't admit guilt but concedes prosecutors have enough evidence to convict her.
Investigators say Morris shot Joshua Morris, a former Republic alderman, in August 2008 at J.R. Martin Park. They believe the Morrises were fighting over their children, who were a short distance away.
KY3-TV reports (http://bit.ly/prdivA) that Morris spent almost a year in a state mental hospital in Fulton. Her attorneys argued she wasn't competent to stand trial but Greene County Circuit Judge Tom Mountjoy ruled last year that she was competent.
Sentencing will be Dec. 9.
