A Pittsfield man has been found competent to stand trial for the murder of his girlfriend.
Gregory Noack, 45, has been charged in the homicide of 45-year-old Dawn Fital. He is scheduled to appear 1 p.m. Oct. 28 at the 14A-1 District Court for a preliminary examination.
Noack is being held without bond and is being represented by the public defender's office.
Authorities say Dawn Fital lived with Noack and another man in Pittsfield Township. She was a competitive billiards player and worked at Walmart with Noack.
After getting a tip from police in Merrilville, Ind., Pittsfield Township police went to Fital's home and learned from the other resident she had been missing since June 13.
Merrilville Police Cmdr. Jim Lilley said Noack was taken into custody June 14 after officers responded to a suspicious person report. They made traffic stop of Noack's vehicle and found Fital's identification. They placed Noack in custody.
On June 16, Merrilville and Pittsfield investigators found Fital's body in a suitcase in a pond behind a Toys R Us store in Hobart, Ind.
Authorities believe the pair got into a fight and Noack killed Fital. He took the body out of state and dumped her when the odor of decomposition became too much for Noack, police said.
Noack was lodged in the Lake County, Ind., Jail and Fital's body was sent to the Lake County coroner for an autopsy.
Pittsfield police submitted their information to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's office June 16 and a warrant for open murder was authorized.
Noack waived extradition and is now lodged in the Washtenaw County Jail.
Anyone having further information about to the incident is asked to call the Pittsfield Township Department of Public Safety at 1-734-822-4911.
