MAUI, Hawaii -- According to the Maui News, the Maui Police opened a homicide investigation with a 38-year-old man in custody as a possible suspect in the death of a 35-year-old woman who is believed to be a former Lake County resident.
Her body was found near Nakalele Point where officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute.
The woman's name has not yet been released. Family friends who contacted the Record-Bee said the woman is a 1994 graduate of Clear Lake High School.
A determination of the cause of the woman's death is pending an autopsy, according to the Maui News.
The suspect is a California man who was taken into custody on Friday morning after he ran from police and jumped into the ocean on Thursday. Gerald Galaway
Maui Police reported that the man and woman were not married, but were staying together in a room at a Kaanapali resort. Maui Police told the Maui News that they believe the couple arrived on Maui on Wednesday.
According to reports, Police were called to the Nakalele Point area just before 6:30 p.m. Thursday after a witness reported a domestic dispute.
Police contacted Maui firefighters and the U.S. Coast Guard to retrieve the man, who had climbed onto a rocky outcropping at the point.
Officers found the dead woman down a rocky cliff nearby.
A vehicle associated with the couple was located in the vicinity of Nakalele Point.
The woman's death is under investigation. Details will be provided as they
