KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Police said a 39-year-old woman who admitted to stabbing her estranged husband to death in Kissimmee was in court Friday.
Lianyanely Prieto Fernandez is facing murder charges in connection with the death of her 51-year-old estranged husband.
Kissimmee police said officers and firefighters responded to a call of fire at Fernandez's home in the 2200 block of Catherine Street on Friday. Investigators said Fernandez shared the home with the victim, her father, Raul Prieto, and her daughter.
According to the arrest affidavit, Fernandez said she started the fire in her room before calling for her husband, at which time, Fernandez said, she attacked him with a knife.
Fernandez told investigators she stabbed her husband because she felt "something bad was going to happen."
Police said the victim suffered several stab wounds all over his body, and there was a knife blade stuck in his right eye.
Police said Fernandez's father and daughter were at home when the incident occurred.
Fernandez's daughter told investigators she was sleeping in her room when she was awakened by the victim, who was screaming, "I'm dying." The daughter said she thought he was joking and went back to sleep. Sometime later, the girl said her mother ordered her to leave the house because it was on fire.
A neighbor told police she saw Fernandez tossing a knife in her garbage can, and when she asked why, Fernandez said, "I had to protect myself."
