KIRKLAND, Washington -- A woman accused of murdering her ex-boyfriend in Kirkland by poisoning his drink and then fleeing to Great Britain appeared in court in Seattle on Tuesday.
Investigators said five years ago that Janjira Jeffery Smith, 56, was jealous that her ex-boyfriend, Roger Lewis, left her for a younger woman. Investigators said Smith sent a bottle of Jagermeister, Lewis' favorite liqueur, to Lewis' new girlfriend as a friendly gesture and suggested the couple drink it together.
The couple drank the liqueur in October 2006. Lewis died and his girlfriend woke up blind 18 hours later.
Smith fled and stayed hidden for a long time.
"This is a great plus for the workings of Interpol and all the police agencies involved to be able to put a warrant online, to have her picked up as she was going through an airport in London, to have her held and eventually have her extradited after two and a half years," King County Senior Deputy Prosecutor Scott O'Toole said. "It's a huge plus for the justice system."
Smith is accused of spiking the Jagermeister with methomyl, a highly poisonous pesticide. She'll likely go on trial later this year or early in 2012.
