Boston, MA: Man shot by Boston police during gunfight last month has died, police say

A man who was shot by Boston police last month after he opened fire and wounded an officer responding to a domestic violence call has died, Boston police said today.

Tyrone Cummings, 25, died at Boston Medical Center on Monday where he was being treated for gunshot wounds received during a violent encounter with police outside 22 Wentworth Terrace in Dorchester on June 14.

Police went to the residence after Cummings’s girlfriend called 911 and reported that her boyfriend attacked her and was threatening to kill her. When police arrived, Cummings immediately opened fire, wounding Officer Shawn Marando, who was struck in the calf by a bullet, the Globe has reported.

Marando, a 13-year-veteran about to complete his shift that day, returned fire as did another officer. Cummings was shot multiple times in the chest area, police said. The sister of Cummings’s girlfriend was also shot in the leg during the gunfight.

Both wounds were considered non-life-threatening.

When Cummings arrived at Boston Medical Center, hospital staff discovered he was carrying a second firearm along with a bag of ammunition.

The shooting remains under investigation by Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley and police.
