AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- The husband of a Michigan woman who disappeared 10 years has been released in Kosovo after being held in connection with the case.
Auburn Hills police and the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office said they had been working with the FBI and U.S. State Department to extradite Kola Gjergjai back to Michigan in order to stand trial for the 1998 attempted murder and 2001 murder of his ex-wife, Rita Gjergjai.
He was arrested earlier this year in Kosovo, but was ordered released on May 13 by the Kosovo Supreme Court.
Aferdita "Rita" Gjergjaj vanished in Feb. 25, 2001, after family members said she was supposed to meet her husband, Binak, and her two children in an Auburn Hills parking lot.
Her car was found, but she was not.
Binak "Kola" Gjergjaj disappeared a short time later, leaving behind the couple's two children.
At the time of the incident, police said they thought Kola Gjergjaj had fled to Kosovo to live with other family members.
