Investigators say a frustrated Sherry Cease once vowed to kill John Wolfe.
During a domestic dispute several days later, she did, police say.
State police at Wyoming on Monday charged Cease with fatally stabbing the 59-year-old on Nov. 30 at their 172 Prospect St. apartment in Plymouth Township. Cease, 42, was charged with third-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter.
Cease admitted to investigators she stabbed Wolfe twice in the upper chest, but claims she did so after he grabbed her throat, arrest papers say.
As part of their investigation, police learned that days before the homicide, Cease discussed her anger with Wolfe with Wolfe's ex-wife, Deborah Winter. Cease vowed to kill Wolfe the next time he assaulted her, Winter told police. Winter said she advised Cease that it would be better to "just move out."
According to arrest papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Donald Whittaker in Nanticoke:
After stabbing Wolfe, Cease called 911 to report she stabbed Wolfe twice during a confrontation. A wounded Wolfe fled to a neighbor's home, where he collapsed on their couch.
Wolfe was taken to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
State police later seized a bloody, 7¾-inch knife from the home.
Police said they interviewed an eyewitness to the stabbing. Charles Arnold, 25, told police he arrived at the home with Cease. He said Cease and Wolfe began arguing because the downstairs was cluttered with boxes and bags. Wolfe, who was intoxicated, told Cease he threw the items all over the place. Arnold said he heard the two yelling at each other, came down the steps and saw Cease and Wolfe face-to-face. Wolfe had his right hand around Cease's throat and Cease held a long knife in her hand, Arnold said.
Soon after, Cease twice stabbed Wolfe in the chest. Wolfe fled the home out the front door, leaving a trail of blood.
Cease was arrested on the charges Monday morning and taken to Whittaker's office for arraignment. Whittaker ordered her jailed in lieu of $75,000 cash bail.
Trooper Tom Kelly, spokesman for state police at Wyoming, said investigators worked thoroughly on the case for months to bring about the charges.
"When you are going to charge someone with homicide, you need to make sure everything you put together is thorough and accurate," Kelly said. "It's another cleared homicide case in Luzerne County."
A preliminary hearing is set for 10.45 a.m. April 26.
