A husband and wife whose bodies were found in a Cape Canaveral apartment during the weekend died in an apparent murder-suicide, authorities say.
An autopsy identified William and Lisa Campbell as the couple found Saturday at an apartment complex in the 8700 block of Ridgewood Avenue.
"It was a domestic-related situation," said Cmdr. Doug Waller of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. "It's very unfortunate and sad."
Investigators did not identify the shooter, but family members reported that William Campbell had apparently left notes detailing an unspecified illness.
"He left notes to that effect. I know she wasn't planning on being killed, she had diving equipment at the door," said Lisa Campbell's mother, Gladys Ruley, of Titusville. "She was a wonderful person, and he was always good to me."
The bodies were found after the Campbells apparently failed to turn up for a scuba diving outing with a friend, according to family members.
The friend went to the apartment and knocked on the door. The friend then looked in a window, spotted the diving gear and decided to contact authorities to do a well-being check on Lisa Campbell.
The family says they remain shocked by the incident.
"I have no idea why . . . We spent a lot of time together vacationing as a family," said Judy Longerbeam, Lisa Campbell's sister.
Lisa Campbell, who recently returned to Brevard to visit her husband, also had previously worked with the space shuttle program and recently went to Maryland to work on another NASA-related job, according to family members.
