RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — A woman charged in connection with the murder of her 87-year-old husband pleaded guilty to first degree murder charges on Tuesday and was sentenced to life without parole.
Melba Gibbs Slaydon, 73, and her son, Ronald Mark Gibbs, are accused in the murder of her husband, Robert Lincoln Slaydon, 87, in July 2007.
The plea was part of an agreement so the District Attorney would eliminate the possibility of a death sentence for her son, Ronald, who is awaiting trial.
The 87-year-old was found buried in a box behind his home in July 2007.
Randolph County Sheriff's detectives believe Melba and her son killed Robert Slaydon for his money then started running. They were arrested in New Mexico in July 2007.
