Wisconsin Shooting Update

Police in Fond du Lac, Wis. may have a motive in the shooting death of a police officer Sunday.

Investigators said the gunman, James Cruckson, 30, shot and killed Officer Craig Birkholz Sunday.

Cruckson later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officials said Cruckson was at local tavern some time before incident, which began at approximately 6 a.m. Sunday. Witnesses said Cruckson talked about “shooting people” because of troubles he was having with his girlfriend.

Police received several calls early Sunday morning from witnesses who heard dozens of gunshots coming from a duplex near S. Lincoln Avenue and W. Division Street.

When police arrived on the scene, Cruckson began firing at officers. Birkholz was hit in the chest. Two other officers were shot during the exchange.

Ryan Williams, a K-9 officer, also was hit in the upper torso. He was taken to a Neenah hospital, where he was in critical condition, as of this report.

Officer Zach Schultz was also hit and is expected to survive.

As the incident unfolded amid a volley of gunfire, police rescued several people from the building
