Two months before Fredmun Reynolds and Danielle Nicholson were married, Reynolds was charged with threatening her with a knife, court documents show.
The assault with a dangerous weapon charge was dismissed after Nicholson, the only witness, apparently was not willing to give testimony to support the charge, according to the documents.
That alleged incident happened Feb. 15, 2010, at their Lansing apartment; on April 24, they signed a marriage license, according to Ingham County records. Nicholson did not take her new husband's last name.
On Wednesday, authorities say Reynolds, 29, stabbed the 22-year-old Nicholson to death at their apartment at 2313 E. Jolly Road. Police found and arrested Reynolds at the apartment.
He was arraigned Friday in 54A District Court on one count of murder. He faces up to life in prison.
During the hearing, Reynolds, who appeared on a video monitor, showed no emotion when Judge Patrick Cherry read the charge against him.
Reynolds said he intends to hire his own attorney. He is being held without bond at the Ingham County Jail.
Nicholson was the mother of two girls, ages 5 and 7, said Lansing police Lt. Noel Garcia. Reynolds has a 2-year-old son from another relationship.
All three children had lived at the apartment in the past, Garcia said, although at the time of the alleged attack they were staying with a relative.
Attempts Friday to reach family members of both Reynolds and Nicholson were unsuccessful.
Records show that Reynolds has previously been convicted of three felonies, including drug and gun charges.
The attorney who represented Reynolds in last year's assault case, Patrick Crowley, could not recall details about the dismissal.
Court documents say prosecutors dismissed the case because they couldn't "sustain (their) burden of proof."
