Authorities said the man had threatened his girlfriend in Anaheim, sparking a search for him.

ORANGE – A man killed himself in Irvine Regional Park Sunday morning after threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend Saturday night in Anaheim, authorities said.
The unidentified 56-year-old man started by threatening his ex-girlfriend in her home on the 4400 block of East Addington Drive in Anaheim just before midnight, said Anaheim Police Sergeant Rick Martinez.

"When she came home at night he was very upset with her and making allegations at her and he was very despondent," Martinez said.
During the hour-long argument the man pulled out a handgun and held it against the woman's head, threatening to kill her several times. Martinez said the man fired the gun against his own head, but the revolver failed.
The man left the home in his red Toyota pickup truck and the woman called police, who started looking for the suicidal man across the county, Martinez said.
The next clue was a call he made to an acquaintance from a pay phone in east Orange at about 6 a.m. Police searched for the man and just after 7 a.m. found the man in the red truck inside Irvine Regional Park, Martinez said.
People and vehicles were blocked from entering the park. Police used armored vehicles to approach the truck with safety. At 9 a.m. police confirmed the man was in the truck, dead from a gunshot wound, Martinez said.
The Orange County Coroner's Department and Orange County Sheriff's Department are investigating the incident. Sheriff's Department Lieutenant Ted Boyne said Irvine Regional Park reopened at 11 a.m.
