Lorain, OH: Lorain man who allegedly shot girlfriend, then himself has died

LORAIN — The Lorain man suspected of shooting himself after allegedly shooting his girlfriend in the face has died.

A spokeswoman at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland said Rayshaun Campbell died Sunday.

Lorain police Sgt. Mark Carpentiere said Campbell’s girlfriend, 22-year-old Raven Montanez, was hit by a bullet in the jaw but fled the apartment after being shot. He said she was treated and released from Mercy Medical Center in Lorain.

After being shot, Montanez fled to her mother’s apartment in another part of the apartment building at 1329 Shaffer Drive, and her mother called police about 4:30 a.m.

In the 911 call, Montanez’s mother said that her daughter had been shot and Campbell, 25, was banging on her door.

Carpentiere said police are still trying to piece together what happened but when police arrived, they found the door to Montanez’s apartment locked. The officers were unable to make contact with Campbell and a SWAT team was called in.

Two small children were in the apartment at the time of the shooting but slept through the incident, he said.

After two hours of being unable to reach Campbell, Carpentiere said SWAT team members forced their way into the apartment and found Campbell with a gunshot wound to the head.

Police recovered a .22-caliber revolver from the scene believed to have been used in both shootings.
Carpentiere said the couple had gotten in an argument after Campbell was dropped off at the apartment by the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Campbell had been stopped by the patrol on a DUI charge earlier in the evening, and the argument may have had something to do with that, Carpentiere said.

At the time of the shooting, Campbell was free on bond while awaiting trial on assault, obstructing official business and resisting arrest charges stemming from a May 30 arrest.

Campbell’s attorney in that case, JD Tomlinson, said in that incident his client had a heated confrontation with police in Lakeview Park over whether he was drinking alcohol in the park.

“He had maintained his innocence,” Tomlinson said.
