GREEN, Ohio — An Ohio man killed his estranged wife and shot at her boyfriend before turning the gun on himself in a murder-suicide, authorities said.
Daniel Schlagenhauser, 27, burst into a mobile home in Green on Thursday and opened fire on Lana Schlagenhauser and Joshua Batdorf, the Akron Beacon Journal reported on Saturday.
Both Schlagenhausers died from gunshots to the neck, according to a spokesman for the county Medical Examiner's Office. Daniel Schlagenhauser's injuries were self-inflicted and Lana's death was ruled a homicide.
It's not clear whether Batdorf was injured in the shooting. He couldn't be reached for comment, but he described the shooting in a 911 call.
"A dude just came in," he said. "He kicked the door in and started shooting ... he shot his ex-wife, he shot at me and then shot himself.... They're both laying here dying and I'm sitting here freaking out."
Detectives are trying to figure out why Schlagenhauser killed his estranged wife and himself, Summit County Sheriff's Inspector William Holland said. There are no records of domestic problems, he said.
Public records don't show a pending divorce between the couple.
The couple had separated about two weeks ago, the Beacon Journal reported. They had lived in the trailer park with their daughters for about two years, neighbors said.
Lana Schlagenhauser was a stay-at-home mother who walked her daughters — a 6-year-old and an 18-month-old — around the park, neighbors said. The girls are now staying with relatives.
"She was a great mother," neighbor Kent Paulson said of Lana Schlagenhauser. "She was always pushing them around the trailer park, walking around with them. I was saddened and shocked."
