LAWRENCE, Ind. -- Lawrence police made an arrest Monday in a fire that killed a 25-year-old woman and her 9-month-old daughter in September.
The bodies of Tracie Shannon and her daughter, Juliana, were found in the apartment in the 5500 block of Old Colony Road, near 56th Street and Interstate 465, on Sept. 19.
Lawrence police Deputy Chief Gary Woodruff said Monday night that Joshwa Carlisle, 22, had been arrested and preliminarily charged with two counts of murder and one count of arson.
Carlisle was Tracie Shannon's ex-boyfriend and the father of the infant, police said.
Investigators said at the time that they based their belief that the blaze was intentionally set on a finding that it had two points of origin, including one in the girl's bedroom.
Woodruff said the Marion County Coroner’s Office determined Tracie Shannon’s cause of death to be smothering or obstruction of the flow of oxygen and setting her and the area around her on fire, while Juliana Shannon’s cause of death was determined to be smoke inhalation and setting her and the area around her on fire.
In an exclusive interview with 6News, Tracie's aunt, Patrice Davis, said Tracie and Carlisle had a rocky relationship. She suspected him of killing Tracie and the baby from the beginning of the case and is relieved he is in custody.
"We were just on a rollercoaster of emotions," Davis said. "We had an idea of who did it, but we had to let the police do their job and gather enough evidence to put the person away, and they were able to find him today, so I’m really excited about that."
