A Bridgeport man awaiting trial for the attempted murder of his ex-wife apparently committed suicide this morning, according to the state Department of Correction.
At approximately 2:45 a.m. this morning, correctional staff at the Bridgeport Correctional Center, during regular tours, found Jasapersaud Hariprashad in a cell with a bed sheet tied around his neck. The other end of the sheet was secured to a vent. Correctional and medical staff immediately worked to revive Hariprashad and he was transported to Saint Vincent Hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 3:30 a.m. Hariprashad was the only inmate in the cell at the time.
Hariprashad, 37, of Bridgeport. He was being held on a $1-million bond for allegedly stabbing his ex-wife on August 10.
According to reports, Hariprashad usesd scissors to break the passenger window of his 38-year-old ex-wife's car as she was driving out of the parking lot at Walmart in Startford. Once he got in the car, police said Hariprashad took the keys, got out of the car to get a knife, came back and sliced the victim's chin and stabbed her twice in the chest. Police said Hariprashad eventually dropped the victim off at Bridgeport Hospital where she was treated for her injuries.
Hariprashad was charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree kidnapping, violation of a protective order, first-degree attempted assault and first-degree reckless endangerment.
The exact manner and cause of Hariprashad's death will be determined by the state Medical Examiner’s Office. The Department of Correction Security Division and the Connecticut State Police are investigating.
