A restraining order had been obtained, but not yet served against the suspect.
Police are calling Armando Perez, 37, a "person of interest" in the death of his wife, Diana Gonzalez. It's believed he may have fled to Mexico.
Gonzalez was found dead inside the men's restroom of the M Building on the campus shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to a police statement.
Police have not said how Gonzalez died.
Police refused to describe her injuries, but San Diego police Capt. Jim Collins said the nature of the wounds made it difficult to immediately identify her.
City College President Terrence Burgess said Wednesday that it appears to have been a domestic violence dispute that spilled over onto campus.
Last month, Gonzalez filed a police report claiming Perez kidnapped her and held her captive in motel rooms for several days, Collins said.
Perez was arrested and released from jail four days later after the district attorney's office declined to file charges against him.
Gonzalez had recently obtained restraining order against Perez, but it had not yet been served on him at the time of the woman's death, Collins said.
The couple has a 9-month-old daughter and had been married for about 10 months.
Armando Perez is thought to be driving a blue 1999 Ford Mustang with the California license plate 6GKA572.
