A Jefferson Circuit Court jury recommended a sentence of life without parole for a Louisville man found guilty in the February 2009 stabbing death of his girlfriend.

The jury made the recommendation late Friday night in the case of Michael Elery, who was convicted Thursday of murder, tampering with physical evidence and violation of a protective order in the death of Dana McDonald, 26. McDonald lived in the 3000 block of Warwickshire Court.

Prosecutors said Elery beat McDonald in the head with a hammer, stabbed her in the throat, tied rope around her body and strangled her to death.

An autopsy concluded that she died from stab wounds.

Elery’s attorneys claimed Elery and McDonald had an argument and he was acting under extreme emotional disturbance when he killed her.
