APD Chief Art Acevedo on overnight shooting incident
One man is dead after leading Austin Police on a citywide chase. It ended with shots fired and what police are calling suicide.
Police say it started when the 26-year-old man stole his ex-girlfriend's car. He led authorities around the city of Austin in the early morning hours Saturday, stopping several times during the chase, waving guns and firing them in the air.
At around 12:25 a.m. Saturday, the man started going the wrong way on US-71, between Riverside Dr. and US-183. He got out and pointed his guns at the occupants of an SUV headed in the other direction.
Police fired one shot at the man, but Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo says the man was killed by a bullet from his own gun.
The officer who fired his gun has been placed on paid administrative leave while APD investigates the incident. That is protocol for this type of incident.
Investigators say the suspect broke up with his girlfriend about four weeks ago, and had since become suicidal.
Due to the complicated nature and immense amount of details surrounding the incident Saturday morning, we have posted the raw interview Chief Art Acevedo gave to the media Saturday morning. You can find it by clicking the link to right.
