UPDATE 8/07/10 @ 8 pm
VANCEBURG, Ky. (WSAZ) – A man who shot his common-law wife then turned the gun on him self had a history of violence, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputy Sheriff Jason Hill told WSAZ.com Fred Blevins shot Shirley Thurman in the back Saturday morning at their Vanceburg home, killing himself and leaving Thurman in critical condition.

Back on April 27, Blevins was arrested and put in jail on 3rd Degree Arson and Assault charges. Deputy Hill said Blevins threatened his family, assaulted Thurman and then doused their house in 15 gallons of gasoline before torching it.

Blevins posted $40,000 property bond and got out of jail on July 9.

Blevins and Thurman moved into a mobile home they rented from Danny Rowe after fire destroyed their previous one. Saturday, Rowe stopped by Blevins and Thurman’s home – he said he saw everything.

“We heard a shot rang out… I saw the dust fly and I thought it was maybe a ricochet from a bullet,” Rowe said, “But she said she's been shot and that’s when I immediately called 911 to get her help.”

Thurman is at Cabell Huntington Hospital, listed in critical condition.
