SAN ANTONIO -- A judge sentenced 36-year-old Leticia Arcos to 40 years for the shooting death of her ex-husband's girlfriend, 32-year-old Kristy Appleby.

Appleby was killed on a February morning last year just outside her workplace at the Bulverde Creek Animal Hospital.

Investigators say Arcos waited for Appleby to show up, then the two argued before Appleby was shot several times.

The two women had run-ins before, but Appleby's protective order against Arcos didn't qualify under Texas law at the time.

Senator Carlos Uresti will be pushing for "Kristy Appleby's Bill" for the second time next year. The bill, which never made it to the House floor the last legislative session, would allow people to get protective orders against their significant others' exes.
