AUGUSTA --- Richmond County investigators say Alif Gilbert of Girard, Georgia is dead after trying to shoot and kill 27-year-old Tiffany Bush in the parking lot of the Covidien Plant in Augusta.
Richmond County Coroner Grover Tuten says Gilbert shot himself one time in the head.
Investigators say Gilbert pulled into the parking lot of the Covidien plant around 7 am Tuesday morning and shot three rounds into 27-year-old Tiffany Bush's car before turning the gun on himself.
We're told by investigators that Bush, an employee at the plant, is lucky to be alive. She was hit by only one bullet. That bullet, investigators say, went behind her ear, fractured the skull and ricocheted back out without ever penetrating her brain cavity. She's expected to make a full recovery.
According to the company website, Covidien creates and delivers health care solutions. It's located at 1430 Marvin Griffin Road across from E-Z-Go.
Investigators say Gilbert and Bush did have a past relationship, but they are not sure if they were currently involved. We're told the shooting happened near a guard shack and investigators have video of the incident.
According to Lisa Clemence, Communications Manager for Covidien, the plant has discontinued operations until it is considered to be safe to resume.
Covidien issued the following on the incident: "We are saddened by the violence that has occurred. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and her family."
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
