Houston, TX: SWAT called out for murder-suicide

Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a woman and apparent suicide of a man at 1370 Afton #817 about 6:20 p.m.Saturday.

Maria Aracel Portillo, 45, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Humberto Canjura,59, suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant W. Meeler and Senior Police Officer J. Selvera said Portillo and her son went to visit Canjura, who is her ex-husband, at his apartment.

Soon after they entered the apartment, Canjura pulled out a gun and shot Portillo several times. The son managed to escape and call police.

Patrol officers arriving at the scene and found the apartment door closed. Believing Canjura was barricaded inside, the HPD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team was called to the scene.

SWAT entered the apartment and found Canjura and Portillo both dead.
