North Haven, CT: Couple Who Lost Son In 9/11 Commits Murder-Suicide

NORTH HAVEN, CT (WPIX) - They lost their youngest son on September 11, 2001 and now the eldery Connecticut couple's lives have also ended.

Thomas Vanacore, 73, and Joan Vanacore, 70, were found dead in their North Haven home Monday in what police say was a murder-suicide.

A visiting nurse, who was caring for the couple, found their bodies after returning from an errand, police said.

Thomas Vanacore shot and killed his wife and then turned the gun on himself, police said.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner did determine that both died of a single separate gunshot wound to the head.

Joan Vanacore's death was ruled a homicide and Thomas Vanacore's death was ruled a suicide, said North Haven Police Detective Captain James Merrithew.

A .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver was used in the killings, said Captain Merrithew

The Vanacores had been both suffering from serious illness, said police.

Their youngest of six children, Edward Vanacore, was 29-years-old when he died during the World Trade Center attacks.
