A grand jury has indicted a Mesa woman on charges of fatally shooting her ex-husband and keeping police at bay during a three-hour standoff.

The indictment, handed up Friday in Maricopa County Superior Court, charges Kathryn Dawn Thorpe, 49, with second-degree murder for allegedly shooting Don Thorpe, 53, twice with a .38-caliber handgun April 7, court documents state.

Police were called to the woman's home in the 1000 block of West Elena Circle about 10 p.m. after a neighbor said Thorpe knocked on his door and said she had shot someone, police said. When officers arrived, Kathryn Thorpe barricaded herself inside the home, but surrendered three hours later after SWAT officers used flash grenades outside her home.

Investigators attempted to speak with Kathryn Thorpe, but "she appeared to be extremely intoxicated with a mixture of alcohol and prescription medication" and possibility of methamphetamine, court documents state.

The woman told police she takes prescription medication for anxiety, but didn't offer a motive for the shooting. Her bond was set at $250,000.
