The murder trial of a Lanett man indicted for murder in the February 2009 death of his live-in girlfriend is expected to begin today in the Chambers County Courthouse.
John Alan Lisenby, 26, was indicted last fall by a grand jury on a charge of murder in the death Amanda Engelhardt, 19.
Lanett police were called to perform a welfare check at a residence in the 1000 block of East First Avenue in the early morning hours of Feb. 27, 2009 after a neighbor heard a lot of noise outside the residence, according to police at the time. When officers arrived at the home shared by Lisenby and Engelhardt, they found her dead, her carotid artery and trachea severed, and a 12-inch butcher knife nearby.
Officers also found the couple’s 8-month-old daughter, abandoned but unharmed. But Lisenby was nowhere to be found.
A manhunt involving several law enforcement agencies quickly ensued and Lisenby was apprehended March 3, 2009 in Mobile by Mobile police and U.S. Marshals.
At the time, police reported that a domestic argument between Lisenby and Engelhardt likely resulted in her death. It was Lanett’s first murder of 2009.
Lisenby has been held at the Chambers County jail since his arrest. He was denied bond because he was deemed a flight risk.
The case will be heard before Circuit Court Judge Tom Young. Lisenby is represented by Mark Carlton of LaFayette.
