A shooting suspect died this morning after wounding his estranged wife's boyfriend and burning down her Rowlett house, police said.
The woman woke up around 1:20 a.m. to find her ex-husband armed with a shotgun and standing in the hallway of the home in the 10800 block of J.A. Forster Drive, just off Elm Grove Road.
The woman's boyfriend came out of the bedroom and tried to grab the gun, causing it to fire. He was shot in the arm and was taken to Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
After the woman and her boyfriend ran outside, police believe the gunman, who was not identified, set fire to the house by tampering with gas lines and electrical wires.
Shooting and house fire
When police arrived, the house was engulfed in flames. After the fire was extinguished, authorities entered to find the man had killed himself, Rowlett police Officer John Ellison said. It was unclear whether he died in the fire or shot himself.A pet was also believed to have perished in the fire, police said.
Police said a protective order had been issued against the ex-husband in 2009, which extended to December 2010.
