COVINGTON — A Covington man, who authorities said had stabbed his wife and two children, died following a crash on Interstate 12 shortly after he left them at home early Sunday.

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies said Monday that Daryl L. Horne, 47, 706 River Oaks Drive, Covington, returned home early Sunday morning after spending a night in a casino.

He then allegedly argued with his wife and stabbed her and their two children, ages 17 and 9, deputies said.

Horne fled in his 2007 Ford Expedition, while neighbors called 911 after the victims went next door for help, deputies said.

Horne’s wife and children were brought to University Hospital in New Orleans for treatment of serious injuries.

The incident is considered an attempted murder by deputies, the news release said.

While traveling eastbound on I-12 about 5 a.m. Sunday, Horne’s SUV sideswiped an 18-wheeler and ran off the road, hitting a tree and overturning, State Police Troop L said in a news release.

Horne then got out of his SUV and stepped into oncoming traffic, State Police said.

He was struck by a 2000 Nissan Altima, State Police said.

The driver and passenger of the Altima were taken to North Shore Regional Medical Center in Slidell for treatment of serious injuries, troopers said.
