NEWARK -- A 53-year-old Newark man who barricaded himself in his ex-girlfriend's Newark apartment after shooting her, then turned the gun on himself, died this afternoon, authorities said.
The victim, a Newark woman between 30 and 40 years of age, underwent surgery Tuesday night and remains in University Hospital in Newark, according to Newark Detective Todd McClendon.
Authorities did not release her condition this afternoon.
The victim was shot multiple times by her ex-boyfriend inside her West Ward apartment shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday night.
The victim was reportedly arguing with her ex-boyfriend when the jilted lover drew a handgun and opened fire in a hallway on the 10th floor of a Manor Drive apartment building, city police spokesman Detective Hubert Henderson said.
The woman remained conscious despite being shot multiple times, according to Henderson.
Once the woman was taken from the building, police tried to contact the alleged shooter, who locked himself in the victim's apartment and didn’t respond, according to Henderson.
Officers at the scene eventually gained entry to the apartment and found the man bleeding on the floor after shooting himself in the head, Henderson said. He was also taken to University Hospital.
The attack took place just a block away from Mount Vernon Elementary School, where a brutal shooting left three college students dead and another gravely wounded in 2007.
