Detectives have confirmed the Tuesday deaths of an elderly Monroe couple were a murder-suicide.

Maj. Don Bartley with the Monroe Police Department's investigative division said Edgar P. Chapman, 88, apparently shot his wife then killed himself at their home at 2715 Bramble Drive.

"We found a note indicating it was a pre-planned event," Bartley said.

Around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, police received a call from a housekeeper who reported gunshots at the residence. Police saw no signs of forced entry into the house and later recovered a handgun from the couple's bedroom.

Bartley said his division will forward the results of the investigation to the 4th Judicial District Attorney's office upon conclusion.
