Alamance County, NC -- Alamance County Sheriff's investigators said a man killed his wife and set their house on fire.

Around 9:15 p.m. Monday, dispatchers received an anonymous call about an issue deputies should look into on Maple Ridge Drive.

Deputies checked several homes before they came across a house where no one answered the door. They walked around back of the house and saw flames coming from a window.

Elon and Faucette Volunteer Fire Departments made their way into the house and found a woman's body in the kitchen area.

The victim was identified as Maria Natacha Oris-Thomas, 27.

Her husband, Alphonza Leonard Thomas III, 27, is charged with first degree murder and first degree arson. He was taken into custody at the Alamance County Sheriff's Office at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputies first caught up with him at his mother's house in Durham Monday night and brought him to the Sheriff's Office for questioning.

The Arson Task Force and SBI were called to help with the investigation.

The 911 call has been sealed as part of the investigation.

District Attorney Pat Nadoliski declined to comment on any specifics of the case, including a possible motive or how exactly she died.

Sheriff Terry Johnson said he was not aware of any prior calls for service to the couple's residence. He said the couple lived together at the home and did not have any children.

The victim is originally from Haiti. Johnson said her mother still lives there and her father lives in Florida, though investigators have been unable to reach either of them.

An autopsy will be performed Wednesday morning in Chapel Hill, Johnson said.
