The stretch of relatively homicide-free months came to an end in the Capital Region Wednesday night when a jilted lover allegedly killed his ex-wife’s new beau.

Raymond D. Van Clief, 27, of Louisville, Ky. is expected to be arraigned this morning on murder charges.

Police said Van Clief killed Elijah S. Trainer with a gunshot inflicted in front of Trainer’s 421 Page. St., Schenectady, home. Trainer is Schenectady’s first homicide victim in nearly six months.

Police said Trainer was dating Van Clief’s ex-wife.

The FBI says the homicide rate in the U.S. dropped 10 percent in the first six months of the year.

For stretches of time this year, Albany, Troy and Schenectady have all gone through periods of peace with no homicides occurring.
