Amarillo, TX: Ex-boyfriend killed with roofing hatchet during assault in Amarillo

AMARILLO — Police said a man was killed after allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend at her apartment Sunday morning.
Sgt. Jason Riddlesperger said police found the body of Christopher Wayne Mooney, 37, in the driveway at 600 S. Bolton St. around 3 a.m. He had suffered a laceration to his chest and was pronounced dead at the scene, a news release said.
Riddlesperger said officers were called to an apartment after a woman called police and told them her ex-boyfriend entered her home and assaulted her.
William Scott Martin, 52, who owns the three-apartment home and is the woman’s uncle, said he was woken up by his niece’s screams early Sunday.
Martin said his niece’s friend let Mooney into the apartment.
Martin said Mooney grabbed his niece by the throat and tried to carry her out of the house.
The release states her current boyfriend, who also lives in the apartment, intervened. When Mooney did not relent, the boyfriend hit him in the chest with a weapon, which Martin identified as a roofing hatchet.
Mooney stumbled outside and collapsed in the driveway, the release said.
